Glass-Only Repair: The Complete Technical Guide to Saving Money on Screen Damage

📅 April 16, 2026 ⏱️ 6 min read ✍️ OnOff Team

Every week at OnOff.gr, customers walk in with cracked iPhones and Samsung phones. The moment they hear the price for a genuine screen replacement, almost everyone asks the same question: "Can't you just replace the glass?" Yes. But not everywhere and not with just any equipment. Here's exactly what happens in the workshop and why the price difference is so massive.

What Glass-Only Repair Actually Means

A modern smartphone screen isn't one piece — it's two. On top sits the outer glass (Gorilla Glass, Ceramic Shield, or Sapphire Crystal, depending on the device). Underneath, bonded to it with specialized adhesive, lies the OLED or AMOLED panel — the expensive screen that displays the image.

Most drops only crack the outer glass. The OLED underneath stays intact. Glass-only repair removes that cracked glass without touching the OLED, then bonds new glass in its place — using OCA (Optically Clear Adhesive), an optically transparent glue specifically engineered for displays.

🔑 The economics are brutal: The OLED screen for an iPhone 16 Pro Max costs ~€350. The outer glass costs ~€30. If only the glass cracks, replacing both makes zero financial sense.

Why Most Repair Shops Don't Offer Glass-Only

The challenge is in that phrase "without touching the OLED." The glass and screen are bonded with that same OCA adhesive — in a 0.25mm layer that's nearly permanent at room temperature. Try separating them with a razor blade or handheld heat gun, and the OLED cracks or clouds permanently.

You need equipment that costs €8,000–15,000 — and technicians who've performed hundreds of these repairs. At OnOff.gr, we use:

Laser Separator

Heats the OCA adhesive with a laser beam — evenly, without affecting the OLED underneath.

70–80°C

OCA Vacuum Laminator

Bonds new glass with fresh OCA under vacuum conditions — prevents bubbles and dust contamination.

vacuum sealed

UV Oven

Cures the OCA adhesive with ultraviolet radiation. Without this step, the adhesive stays soft.

UV 365nm, 3–5 min

Autoclave

Pressure chamber that eliminates micro-bubbles invisible to the naked eye. The final step for perfection.

3–4 bar

The Glass-Only Repair Process — Step by Step

  1. Diagnosis: we first check if the OLED is intact If there are spots, lines, or dead pixels, we stop here — glass-only won't work. No point bonding new glass to a damaged display.
  2. Heating with laser separator at 70–80°C Duration depends on the model — some iPhones (like the 15 Pro Max) need 10 minutes at this step due to stronger OCA adhesive.
  3. Separating glass from OLED with metal spatula The motion must be smooth and steady. Any jerky movement can crack the OLED — this is why this step requires experience.
  4. Cleaning OCA residue from the OLED surface With 99% isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloths. No trace of old adhesive can remain — otherwise the new OCA won't bond properly.
  5. Lamination: new glass + fresh OCA in the vacuum laminator 8–12 minutes under vacuum. The OCA polymerizes slightly and the glass bonds perfectly without bubbles.
  6. UV curing in the UV oven to harden the adhesive 3–5 minutes with 365nm ultraviolet radiation. After this, the OCA is fully cured and optically clear.
  7. Final quality control We check image quality, touch response, uniform brightness, absence of bubbles. Only then does the device leave the workshop.

When Glass-Only Repair Won't Work

It's not the solution for every cracked screen. Glass-only repair cannot be done when:

  • The OLED has already cracked or shows spots, lines, dead pixels
  • Glass fragments have penetrated the OLED-glass separation line (happens in severe edge or corner impacts)
  • The device is an older model with non-separable display assembly

In these cases, the only correct option is replacing the entire genuine screen assembly.

Questions We Get Asked Daily

"Will there be any difference in image quality afterward?"

No, if the repair is done correctly. The OCA adhesive we use has 99.5% optical transparency — meaning negligible impact on image quality. The screen looks identical to a new one.

"Is the replacement glass genuine?"

The outer glass we use matches the original's hardness and dimensions. It's not Corning Gorilla Glass from the same manufacturer, but high-quality glass with equivalent characteristics — which is what ultimately gets replaced in any repair, genuine or not.

"Is there a warranty?"

Yes — 12 months, the same warranty we provide for genuine screen replacement. If bubbles appear or the glass debonds, it's fixed at no charge.

"Do I need an appointment?"

Recommended — especially for glass-only, which takes 2-3 hours. With an appointment, you don't wait. You can drop off your device in the morning and pick it up at noon.

"Could this damage Face ID?"

In glass-only repair, we don't touch the OLED or Face ID sensor — so Face ID remains exactly as it was. It could only be affected if the laser separator is used incorrectly and overheats the OLED. That's why proper equipment — and experience — matter.

Why We've Been Doing This Since 2018

Glass-only repair wasn't common practice in Greece in 2018. Most repair shops replaced entire screens because they lacked the equipment or training for separation.

At OnOff.gr, we invested early in the equipment — laser separator, OCA vacuum laminator, UV oven, autoclave — and started doing glass-only repairs first in Athens. Those thousands of repairs taught us when glass-only works, when it doesn't, and when to recommend the full replacement instead.

⚠️ Beware of "cheap" glass-only repairs

Some shops do "glass replacement" without a vacuum laminator — just with a handheld heat gun, OCA, and finger pressure. The result: bubbles, cloudiness within weeks, or glass debonding. When prices seem suspiciously low, ask what equipment they use.
