Sony Xperia 1 VII Review: The Ultimate Photography Smartphone with ZEISS Optics and Pro Controls

📅 February 28, 2026 ⏱️ 5 min read

Sony stubbornly follows its own philosophy: phones that are cameras first. The Xperia 1 VII is the culmination of this approach, featuring ZEISS optics, a dedicated shutter button, and the most versatile telephoto zoom on any smartphone in 2026.

Design & Build Quality

Sony keeps its classic, rectangular design DNA intact. At 197 grams with IP65/IP68 certification, the Xperia 1 VII withstands dust and water with ease. The rear panel uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 while the frame is metal. The standout feature? A dedicated shutter button on the side — exactly like a real camera. Half-press locks autofocus, full press fires the shot. A 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD slot round out the package — two features that are increasingly rare in 2026 flagships.

Display — 120Hz OLED with 1,655 nits

The 6.5-inch OLED panel delivers 2340×1080 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness reaches 1,655 nits — excellent for outdoor use. It's not the brightest display in its class (Xiaomi and Samsung exceed 3,000 nits), but color accuracy is where it truly shines. Sony uses the BT.2020 color gamut, the same standard used in the film industry. That makes sense coming from a company that also builds cinema cameras.

Camera — The Heart of the Xperia 1 VII

This is the reason this phone exists. The triple ZEISS camera system includes:

  • 48MP main sensor — Exmor T sensor with ZEISS lens, f/1.7 aperture, OIS. Outstanding dynamic range and color accuracy
  • 48MP ultrawide — 16mm focal length, perfect for landscapes and architecture
  • 12MP telephoto — 7.1x optical zoom (168mm) with continuous zoom. At maximum zoom it remains noticeably sharper than the digital crop approaches of competitors

Continuous zoom means the lens physically moves between focal lengths without any jumps. This gives photographers tremendous creative freedom. Combined with ZEISS T* anti-reflective coatings, flare and reflections are minimized even in harsh sunlight.

Photography Pro Mode: Sony integrates full manual controls for ISO, shutter speed, EV, and white balance. Real-time histogram, focus peaking, and eye-AF tracking even for animals — everything you would expect from a Sony Alpha mirrorless camera, packed into a phone.

Night Photography & Video

In low light, the large Exmor T sensor helps significantly, though it does not match the Pixel 11 Pro or Galaxy S26 Ultra in computational photography. Sony relies more on hardware than AI tricks — something photographers appreciate, but it may disappoint casual users. In video, however, Sony reigns supreme: 4K at 120fps, Videography Pro with Cinema style profiles, S-Cinetone color science, and reliable AF tracking make it the best phone for video creators.

Performance & Battery

The Snapdragon 8 Elite paired with 12GB of RAM delivers top-tier performance. The 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage is adequate, especially with microSD expansion up to 1TB. The 5,000mAh battery easily lasts a full day — in the WiFi browsing test, it recorded 21.5 hours. Charging speed at 30W is the main drawback, painfully slow compared to the 90W or faster speeds offered by competitors. There's also no charger included in the box.

Software & Updates

The Xperia 1 VII runs Android 15 (already upgraded to Android 16) with a near-stock UI. Sony promises 4 OS upgrades and 6 years of security updates. The clean interface means less bloatware but also fewer extras compared to One UI or HyperOS. For users who prefer simplicity, it is ideal. Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, and Wi-Fi 7 round out the connectivity package.

Price & Competition

At €1,499, the Xperia 1 VII is not cheap. It competes with the Galaxy S26 Ultra (€1,449), iPhone 17 Pro (€1,229), and Xiaomi 17 Ultra (~€950 import). The difference? None of those offer a dedicated shutter button, 7.1x continuous optical zoom, 3.5mm jack AND microSD simultaneously. It is a niche product for photographers and content creators — and in that arena, it is unmatched.

"If mobile photography is not just point-and-shoot for you but an art form, the Xperia 1 VII is the only smartphone that treats you like a photographer."

Verdict

The Sony Xperia 1 VII is not for everyone. It does not take the brightest selfies, does not have the fastest charger, and lacks AI photo editing tricks. What it does offer is the most complete photographic experience on any smartphone. The continuous zoom, ZEISS optics, Photography Pro, and physical shutter button create a genuine tool, not just a phone. If you shoot in manual mode, if you record video in Log, if you know what focus peaking is, this is your phone.
