🍎 MagSafe: Apple's Premium Ecosystem

Apple introduced MagSafe on the iPhone 12 in October 2020, bringing magnetic alignment to wireless charging. It initially offered 15W, but with the iOS 26 update in October 2025, speeds jumped to 25W for iPhone 16 and iPhone 17, essentially adopting the Qi2.2 standard under the hood.

MagSafe's advantages are significant: perfect magnetic alignment every time, charger recognition in iOS with custom animations, and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. The connection is instant — place your iPhone on the charger and the magnetic “click” ensures proper positioning without any slipping.

Apple recently reintroduced the MagSafe Battery Pack for iPhone Air at $99 (~€95), while the MagSafe accessory lineup includes wallets, rings, car mounts, and much more. Anker released a new 25W MagSafe 3-in-1 charger in February 2026 featuring active cooling in a compact, travel-friendly design.

💡 Did you know? Apple contributed its MagSafe technology to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) to create Qi2. The Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile is entirely based on MagSafe's magnet array — only now it's open to all manufacturers.

⚡ Qi2.2: The Open Standard Revolution

In July 2025, the Wireless Power Consortium officially announced Qi2 25W (known as Qi2.2), marking a new era in wireless charging. Qi2.2 delivers the same 25W as MagSafe, uses magnetic alignment (Magnetic Power Profile), but is an open standard supported by iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Pixel, and many other devices.

The major difference is price. Third-party Qi2.2 chargers cost significantly less than their MagSafe-certified counterparts. Kuxiu released the X55 Turbo, a budget-friendly 25W Qi2.2 charger, while EcoFlow's Rapid Mag combines Qi2.2 25W charging, a built-in USB-C cable, kickstand, and 10,000mAh battery all in one product.

For iPhone 16, iPhone 17, and iPhone Air, iOS 26 enabled full Qi2.2 support at 25W. iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 support Qi2 at 15W (via iOS 17.2), while iPhone 12 gained Qi2 support through iOS 17.4.

📶 Qi (1st Gen): The Legacy Standard

The original Qi tops out at just 7.5W on iPhone — more than 3 times slower than MagSafe and Qi2.2. Without magnets, alignment relies entirely on eyeballing placement, meaning the phone can easily slide off — especially if a notification vibration hits. Charging temperatures are also higher due to lower efficiency.

That said, Qi chargers remain the cheapest option on the market (from €10-15) and are compatible with every smartphone that has supported wireless charging over the past decade. If you simply want slow overnight charging on a nightstand, a Qi charger does the job just fine.

🔮 What's Coming: MagSafe 50W?

According to regulatory filings spotted in June 2025, Apple is preparing a new MagSafe charger supporting up to 50W wireless charging. This would mean doubling the current speed and likely integration into upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models. The EU has confirmed that Apple can legally build a portless iPhone relying exclusively on wireless charging — making 50W speeds even more significant.

🛒 Which Should You Choose?

  • Apple exclusively? MagSafe — perfect iOS integration with animations, charger recognition, and seamless ecosystem performance
  • iPhone + Android household? Qi2.2 — same 25W speed, lower prices, works with Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, and more
  • Budget/basic needs? Qi — if you only charge overnight or already have a charger, no need to upgrade
  • Frequent travelers? Qi2.2 power bank (e.g., EcoFlow Rapid Mag) — magnetic attachment + USB-C + kickstand in one device
⚡ OnOff Tip: If you buy a Qi2.2 charger today, it'll work with future iPhones too. Qi2 is backward compatible — anything supporting Qi2.2 automatically supports Qi2 (15W) and Qi (7.5W) as well.
