Lost your phone? Had it stolen? Don't panic. Google provides a powerful tracking tool — Find My Device — that lets you locate, lock, or erase your device remotely. In 2026, the system is more powerful than ever thanks to the new crowd-sourced tracking network.

Initial Setup
Before you need Find My Device, make sure it's enabled: Settings → Security → Find My Device → Enable. Also check that Location Services are active. If you have multiple devices (phone, tablet, watch), they all appear under the same account.
Third important setting: enable "Store recent location". This saves the last known location even when the battery dies. Go to Find My Device settings and ensure “Participate in Find My Device network” is set to “With network in high-traffic areas only” or “With network in all areas”.
Locating Your Device
If you lose your phone, visit android.com/find or open the Find My Device app on another Android phone. Sign in with your Google account and you'll see your device on the map in real time.

If the phone is offline, you'll see the last known location. With the new crowd-sourced network, even if the phone is off or has no internet, nearby Android phones can detect its location via Bluetooth — similar to Apple's AirTag network.
Remote Ring
If the phone is nearby but you can't find it (lost in the couch, in the car), tap "Play Sound". It will ring at maximum volume for 5 minutes, even if it's on silent mode. It's loud enough to locate in a room.

Lock & Message
If you believe someone found your phone, tap "Secure Device". This will: lock the screen with a PIN, display a custom message (e.g., “If you found this phone, please call 555-XXXX”), and show a call button. It also disconnects Google Pay so nobody can make payments.
Remote Erase
If the device can't be recovered, the last resort is "Erase Device". This wipes ALL data — photos, apps, accounts. The device gets a factory reset. After erasing, you can no longer locate it, so use this as a last resort.
Important: the device remains locked to your account (Factory Reset Protection). Even if someone resets it, they can't use it without your Google password.
Crowd-Sourced Tracking (New 2026)
The biggest upgrade of 2026 is the Find My Device Network. It works similarly to Apple's AirTag/Find My: billions of Android devices form a mesh that locates lost items via Bluetooth Low Energy.
It supports compatible trackers (Chipolo, Pebblebee, upgraded Samsung SmartTags) that you can attach to keys, luggage, or even your cat. Accuracy reaches a few meters in densely populated areas.

Theft Detection Lock
The new Theft Detection Lock feature uses AI to detect theft. If someone grabs your phone from your hand and runs, the motion sensor detects the sudden movement and automatically locks the screen. Enable it: Settings → Security → Theft protection.
In the same menu you'll find Offline Device Lock: if someone turns off data or WiFi, the phone locks automatically after a few minutes. And finally, Remote Lock via phone number — you can lock the phone by sending an SMS even without internet access.
Tip: Set everything up NOW, before you lose your device. Spend 5 minutes: enable Find My Device, Location, Crowd-sourced network, Theft Detection, and save an emergency number on the lock screen.
