What Gets Saved in Google One backup
Google One Backup is Android's built-in backup solution. It automatically uploads your data to Google Cloud, encrypted. Here's what it includes:
Warning: What Does NOT Get Saved
Files in internal storage (downloads, documents), app data from apps that don't support backup, locally stored music, and WhatsApp/Telegram chats (these need separate backup within each app). Make sure you back these up separately!
Method 1: Google One Backup (Automatic)
The easiest method — enable once and never think about it again.
- Open Settings on your Android device.
- Tap Google → All services → Backup.
- Enable "Back up to Google One".
- Choose what to save: Photos, Device data, or both.
- Make sure you have a screen lock (PIN/pattern/password) — without it, data isn't fully encrypted.
- Leave your device on Wi-Fi and charging — the first backup can take up to 24 hours.
Method 2: Local Backup to Computer
USB Transfer
Connect your phone via USB-C to your computer. On Android, select "File Transfer" in the USB notification. On your computer, copy files from folders like DCIM, Documents, Downloads, WhatsApp, etc. This method doesn't save settings or app data.
Smart Switch (Samsung)
If you have a Samsung, Smart Switch does a full backup to PC/Mac. Download Smart Switch on your computer, connect via USB, select Backup and wait. It saves apps, settings, messages, calls, photos — almost everything.
ADB Backup (Advanced)
For advanced users, the ADB backup command creates a full backup. You need USB Debugging enabled. Command: adb backup -apk -shared -all -f backup.ab. Note: Google is gradually deprecating this method.
Method 3: Third-Party Apps
Swift Backup
Premium backup app that saves SMS, calls, contacts, wallpapers, app data (with root). Supports storage to Google Drive, Dropbox or local storage. Automatic backup scheduling. Price: ~€4/year.
Titanium Backup (root)
The classic choice for rooted devices. Full app+data backup, batch operations, system app saving. For advanced users only — requires root access.
Seedvault (GrapheneOS/custom ROMs)
Open-source backup solution built into GrapheneOS, CalyxOS and LineageOS. Encrypted, stores to USB drive or Nextcloud. Excellent choice for privacy-conscious users.
How to Restore
- During initial setup of a new or reset device, select "Restore data".
- Sign in to the same Google account you used for backup.
- Select the device you want to restore from.
- Choose which data you want: apps, settings, SMS, photos.
- Wait — the restore can take up to 24 hours depending on the volume.
Important
The new device must run the same or newer Android version as the one that created the backup. You cannot restore an Android 17 backup to a device running Android 15.

Security & Encryption
Google One Backup uses end-to-end encryption for sensitive data. This means:
- Data is encrypted with your screen lock (PIN/pattern/password)
- Not even Google can read it without your screen lock
- Photos and videos on Google Photos are encrypted in transit
- MMS messages are not E2E encrypted — keep this in mind

Backup Checklist — Don't Forget
- WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up to Google Drive
- Telegram: Cloud-based — no backup needed, but export if you want
- Google Authenticator: Sync with Google Account (enable this!)
- Password Manager: Make sure cloud sync is enabled
- Downloads: Manually copy to Drive or PC
- Notes Apps: Google Keep syncs automatically, Samsung Notes needs Samsung Cloud
Our Verdict
For most users, Google One Backup is enough — enable it, forget it. If you have Samsung, supplement with Smart Switch. Don't forget WhatsApp chats and authenticator codes — those are the easiest to lose!
