You tap the Camera app and see black. Or the image shakes uncontrollably. Or the lens won't focus and every shot comes out blurry, even from two feet away. iPhone camera problems fall into three buckets — and only one of them requires hardware replacement. Start with the free fixes.
🔧 Try These First: Software Fixes
- 🔄 Force-close the Camera app completely (swipe up from bottom) and reopen it.
- 📱 Force restart: Volume Up → Volume Down → Hold side button for 10 seconds. This clears memory cache.
- ⚙️ Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. (Don't worry, this won't delete your data.)
- 💾 Check free storage space (Settings → General → iPhone Storage). Less than 1 GB can freeze the camera.
- 🔃 If nothing above helps and you have a backup, try updating iOS (Settings → General → Software Update).
If the camera still acts up after all that, you're dealing with one of three hardware scenarios.
📋 The 3 Hardware Scenarios
Scenario 1: Damaged Lens or Scratched Camera Glass
Cheapest fixIf the camera opens and functions normally — it turns on, focuses, takes photos — but the result is blurry or "smudged," check the camera glass first. Cracked or scratched glass distorts the image before it even hits the sensor.
Camera glass replacement is the most economical repair — takes about 30 minutes.
- iPhone 14/15 camera glass replacement: €28–45
- iPhone 16 Pro camera glass replacement: €45–60
Scenario 2: Broken Camera Module Replacement
Most commonIf the camera either won't open at all (black screen), focus gets stuck, or the OIS (image stabilizer) fails (you see constant shaking), the problem is the camera module itself.
For iPhone 13/14/15/16, the main rear camera gets replaced with an authentic module to preserve full functionality (Photonic Engine, Cinematic Mode, etc.). Aftermarket modules exist but lose features.
Worth noting: the front camera (selfie) must use authentic modules to keep Face ID working — no aftermarket option here.
Scenario 3: Motherboard Damage — Connector or ISP Chip
Rare but expensiveIf replacing the camera module doesn't fix the issue, the problem might be the motherboard connector or the image signal processor (ISP chip). This often happens after drops that didn't crack the screen but damaged internal components.
Motherboard repair requires microsolder work and specialized equipment — hot air rework stations and microscopes. Success depends on the extent of damage.

📱 iPhone 14 Pro Camera: The Expensive Case
The iPhone 14 Pro's triple camera system (48MP main + 12MP ultrawide + 12MP telephoto) makes replacement more complex. The authentic module includes its own ISP sub-chip — use aftermarket and you lose ProRes video recording plus the Photonic Engine processes images at reduced quality.
That's why for iPhone 14 Pro and newer, OnOff.gr uses exclusively authentic modules. The price is higher but the result is exactly what the phone had from the factory.
🤳 Front Camera (Selfie): Different Rules
The front camera on iPhone 13 and newer includes TrueDepth sensors for Face ID. Replace it with a non-authentic module and Face ID stops working entirely. This isn't a minor detail — you literally can't use many core phone functions.
For this reason, front camera replacement only uses authentic modules — and costs from €88.63 (iPhone 14) to €92.66 (iPhone 14 Pro Max).
