Apple Maps has evolved from its rocky beginnings into a full-featured navigation platform with topographic maps, offline downloads, 3D cities, EV routing, and — as of February 2026 — a comprehensive Formula 1 track guide featuring 3D grandstand models and real-time updates via Apple Sports.

🏎️ F1 Tracks Guide: The Big 2026 Addition
In October 2025, Apple announced a five-year partnership with Formula 1 for exclusive streaming rights in the United States via Apple TV. As part of this deal, Apple Maps launched the "2026 Formula 1 Tracks Around the World" guide in February 2026.
The first circuit to receive a fully immersive 3D experience is Albert Park in Melbourne, where the 2026 season kicks off on March 8. The map features realistic kerbs, all 14 numbered turns, three-dimensional grandstands with names, footbridges, and even service points — restrooms, water stations, first aid, merchandise stands, and entrance gates. You can get step-by-step walking directions to your specific grandstand seat.
Several other circuits have been upgraded with new 3D graphics, though not yet to Albert Park's level of detail: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Montreal), Miami International Autodrome, Circuit de Monaco, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Silverstone, and Red Bull Ring. More tracks will follow as the season progresses.
Apple Sports & F1: The Apple Sports app provides live updates for every qualifying session, Sprint, and race — real-time leaderboards, driver and constructor standings, Live Activities, and widgets.

📍 iOS 26: Visited Places & Preferred Routes
With iOS 26, Apple Maps introduced two major features powered by on-device intelligence:
- Visited Places: Automatically logs places you visit — restaurants, shops, transit stops. The data is end-to-end encrypted and syncs across your Apple devices. You can search by date, category, or name, add personal notes, and save locations to custom guides. The feature is opt-in — a popup appears on first launch after the update.
- Preferred Routes: Using on-device Apple Intelligence, Maps learns your daily driving patterns (home, work, school) and the times you travel, suggesting alternative routes to avoid traffic. The feature can be disabled in Settings.
🗺️ Topographic Maps, Hiking & Custom Routes
Since iOS 18, Apple Maps directly competes with AllTrails by offering topographic maps in the U.S. You can browse thousands of hiking trails across all 63 national parks, filtered by length, elevation, and route type. Create custom walking and hiking routes — one-way, loop, or freeform — and save them for offline use.
Offline maps (introduced in iOS 17) let you download entire regions with full turn-by-turn navigation without a connection. Ideal for traveling in rural areas or abroad without mobile data.

👀 Look Around & Maps on the Web
Apple continues to expand Look Around — its Google Street View competitor — to more cities worldwide, with image resolution that exceeds the competition. Since December 2024, Look Around is also available on the web version of Apple Maps, which supports Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.
In March 2025, Apple launched the Surveyor app, enabling partners to collect data — street sign images, roadside details — to improve map accuracy.
🔌 EV Routing & Transit
For electric vehicles, Maps automatically calculates charging stops based on your car model, battery level, and traffic conditions. Combined with multi-stop routing (iOS 16+), you can plan an entire road trip with multiple waypoints.
Real-time transit information has expanded to major cities — including Tokyo (August 2024) — with live schedules for buses, trains, and trams. Cycling directions were extended to the UK, Ireland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
"Our goal is for Apple Maps to become the most useful map for every scenario — and our Formula 1 partnership shows how we can integrate live experiences into navigation."
— Apple, October 2025
