iPhone Air 2nd Generation: Apple's Redemption After the First Model's Commercial Failure

📅 February 27, 2026 ⏱️ 4 min read ✍️ OnOff Team
The iPhone Air (Sep 2025) was the thinnest iPhone ever 📱 at just 5.6 mm, but sales were so disappointing that production was cut 80% and eventually ceased. Apple is now preparing a 2nd generation with a second camera, bigger battery, and next-gen CoE display technology.

What Was the 1st-Gen iPhone Air

In September 2025, Apple launched the iPhone Air — a smartphone just 5.6 mm thick and weighing 165 grams 🪶. Built with a Grade 5 titanium polished frame, a 6.5″ OLED 120 Hz ProMotion display, and the A19 Pro chip (5-core GPU, 12 GB RAM), it was an engineering marvel. It featured Apple's own C1X modem — 2× faster than the C1 — and the N1 networking chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Price: $999.

📉 Why It Underperformed Commercially

Despite excellent design reviews, sales fell far below expectations. Production was cut by 80% in October 2025 and eventually ceased entirely. Two main reasons:

1 Camera Single 48MP ƒ/1.6 rear — no Ultra Wide, Telephoto, macro, or spatial video
3,149 mAh Smallest battery in the entire iPhone 17 lineup — just 27 hours of video

On top of that, it had only one speaker (mono) instead of stereo, eSIM only worldwide 🌐, and 20W MagSafe wireless charging — 5W less than every other iPhone 17. At $999, consumers either chose the iPhone 17 ($799, dual camera, bigger battery) or spent $100 more on the iPhone 17 Pro (triple camera, $1,099) 💰.

What Changes in iPhone Air 2

According to The Information, Bloomberg, MacRumors, and 9to5Mac, Apple is preparing a meaningful redesign targeting the exact weak points:

Expected Upgrades

  • Second camera: Apple is considering adding an Ultra Wide or Telephoto lens — unconfirmed which one, but engineers are pushing for Ultra Wide to enable spatial video and macro
  • Bigger battery: Thanks to new CoE (Color on Encapsulation) display tech, the screen becomes thinner — freed-up space goes to a larger battery cell
  • Smaller Dynamic Island: A thinner Face ID module is under development for a cleaner front profile

What Is CoE Display Technology

The biggest innovation expected in Air 2 is the CoE (Color on Encapsulation) display 🔬. According to Korean outlet The Elec, Apple is developing this technology that replaces traditional color filters with integrated Color on Encapsulation layers. The benefits are twofold:

  • 📐 Thinner panel: Saves internal space for a bigger battery or even slimmer design
  • ☀️ Brighter display: With less power draw at the same brightness level — a double win for battery life

CoE technology is expected to debut first in the iPhone Fold (Fall 2026) and then in the iPhone Air 2. If it works well, it could give the Air 2 battery life competitive with standard iPhones 🔋.

📅 When Does It Launch

Most sources agree on Spring 2027 — alongside the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e lineup. Apple originally planned September 2026, but poor first-gen sales led to the delay. One leaker (Fixed Focus Digital) insists it will be announced within 2026, but Bloomberg and The Information say otherwise 📆.

"Some Apple engineers are hoping to release a redesigned version with a second camera lens in spring 2027 alongside existing plans to release the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e at that time."

Should You Wait?

If you love the ultra-thin design but want better camera and battery life, yes — Air 2 appears to fix exactly those shortcomings. If you can't wait until 2027, the iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099 offers triple 48MP cameras, vapor chamber cooling, and 33 hours of video playback 🎬. The first-gen iPhone Air still sells for $999, but no new model is expected before at least 2027.
