Apple Intelligence: The Complete Guide to AI Features on Your iPhone

📅 February 7, 2026 ⏱️ 10 min read ✍️ OnOff Team

Apple Intelligence is the biggest change in the Apple ecosystem in recent years. It is a comprehensive artificial intelligence system that transforms the way we use the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. At OnOff.gr, we’ve prepared the most complete guide so you can understand every aspect of this technology and make the most of its capabilities on your iPhone.

15+ AI Features
100% On-Device Security
12+ Languages (2026)
8GB Minimum RAM

🤖 What Is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is the artificial intelligence platform that Apple introduced at WWDC in June 2024. Unlike other AI solutions that rely exclusively on the cloud, Apple chose a hybrid approach: most features run locally on your device, while more complex tasks are executed on Apple’s secure servers through Private Cloud Compute.

The first Apple Intelligence features launched with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Subsequently, new features were added in the iOS 18.2 update and beyond. Throughout 2026, Apple continues to evolve the platform with the Google Gemini partnership for the next-generation Siri.

💡 Important: Apple Intelligence doesn’t simply replace Siri – it’s an entire AI system integrated into every aspect of the operating system, from Writing Tools to photo management and notifications.

✍️ Writing Tools

Writing Tools are perhaps the most useful everyday feature of Apple Intelligence. They’re available everywhere you can type text – Mail, Messages, Notes, Safari, and in third-party apps.

  • Proofread: Checks for spelling and grammar errors, including word choice and sentence structure. You can accept all suggestions at once or review them one by one with explanations.
  • Rewrite: Rewrites your text by changing the tone without altering the meaning. Options: Friendly, Professional, and Concise.
  • Summarize: Creates a summary of the text in paragraph, key points, list, or table format.
  • Compose: Uses integrated ChatGPT to write text from scratch based on your instructions.
  • Open-ended: Describe any change you want – turn the text into a poem, make it more detailed, or change its format.

🎨 Image Playground – AI Image Creation

Image Playground lets you create images in cartoon style (Animation or Illustration) using text descriptions. Apple provides built-in suggestions, costumes, locations, objects, and themes.

Image Playground works both as a standalone app and integrated into the Messages and Notes apps. You can upload or take a photo, get an AI cartoon-style version, or use images of friends and family members from the People album in Photos. It’s worth noting that it does not support photorealistic images – only Animation and Illustration styles.

😎 Genmoji – Create Your Own Emoji

Can’t find the emoji you need? With Genmoji, you can create custom emoji characters using a text description. A duck eating a sandwich? An alligator on a skateboard? No problem! You can use yourself, friends, or generic characters as a base.

To create a Genmoji, tap on the Emoji keyboard and the “+” button next to the search bar. Then type your idea. Genmoji display correctly on devices running iOS 18.1 and later – on Android or older iOS versions, they won’t appear properly.

🖼️ Clean Up – Remove Objects from Photos

The Clean Up feature in Photos lets you remove unwanted objects from your photos. The tool can automatically detect objects you probably don’t want, but you can also tap, circle, or brush over anything you want removed.

If you zoom in, you can use your finger as a brush for smaller imperfections. The AI is smart enough not to remove parts of people, even if you accidentally select them. It works on all images – even older photos or images from a DSLR.

Smart Reply

Suggested quick replies in Mail and Messages based on the content you received.

🔔

Priority Notifications

Important notifications appear first, while the rest are automatically summarized.

💬 Smart Reply – Intelligent Responses

In Mail and Messages, Apple Intelligence analyzes the content of incoming messages and suggests quick, relevant replies. You don't need to type anything – just tap one of the suggested responses.

In Mail, there's also a Summarize button for email summaries, and you'll see a brief summary in the inbox list instead of the first few lines. Time-sensitive messages automatically appear first.

🔔 Priority Notifications & Notification Summaries

Priority Notifications appear at the top of the notification stack so you see what’s truly important first. Multiple notifications from the same app are automatically summarized on the Lock Screen, so you can see at a glance what you’ve received.

There’s also the Focus Mode “Reduce Interruptions”, which uses AI to show you only the notifications that need your attention, filtering out the rest. You can enable “Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing” in any Focus mode.

🗣️ Siri – Upgrades & Next Generation with Google Gemini

Siri received significant upgrades with Apple Intelligence. A glow now appears around the edges of the screen when activated, and you can type requests instead of speaking (Type to Siri) by double-tapping the bottom of the screen.

Siri can now maintain context between requests – if you ask about the temperature in Athens and then “what’s the humidity?”, it will understand you’re still referring to Athens. Also, if you stumble or change your sentence mid-way, it will follow along without any issues.

"After careful evaluation, we concluded that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we are excited about the innovative experiences we will offer our users." — Apple, Google Gemini partnership announcement (January 2026)

In early 2026, Apple confirmed its partnership with Google for the next-generation Siri, which will be powered by Google Gemini models. The upgraded Siri is expected sometime in 2026 (possibly with iOS 26.4) and will bring:

  • Onscreen Awareness: Siri will “see” what’s on your screen and be able to act on it – e.g., “Send this photo to George.”
  • Personal Context: It will learn from your emails, messages, and habits (on-device) for personalized responses.
  • In-App Actions: Move files, control app features, even in third-party apps.
  • Better Answers: With Gemini models, more accurate and conversational answers to general knowledge questions.

📱 Compatible Devices – Which iPhones Are Supported?

Apple Intelligence requires a device with Apple’s latest chips and at least 8GB RAM. The compatible iPhone devices are:

📋 Apple Intelligence Compatibility – iPhone

iPhone 17 / iPhone 17 Pro / iPhone 17 Pro Max / iPhone Air ✅ Full support
iPhone 16 / iPhone 16 Plus ✅ Full support
iPhone 16 Pro / iPhone 16 Pro Max ✅ Full support
iPhone 15 Pro / iPhone 15 Pro Max ✅ Supported
iPhone 15 / iPhone 15 Plus ❌ Not supported
iPhone 14 and older ❌ Not supported

⚠️ Warning: If you have an iPhone 15 (non-Pro), Apple Intelligence is not supported due to insufficient RAM (6GB). Only Pro models from the 15th generation and all iPhone 16+ have the required 8GB.

🔒 Privacy & On-Device Processing

Apple places privacy at the core of Apple Intelligence. The fundamental architectural philosophy is: if something can be done locally, it’s done locally. Most AI models run on-device, without any data leaving your device.

For more complex requests that require cloud computing, Apple uses Private Cloud Compute (PCC). These are Apple silicon servers running specialized software, designed so that:

  • Your data is never stored on the servers
  • It is not used for training AI models
  • There is independent verification – the code is available for audit by security experts
  • Apple has already begun shipping Made-in-America AI servers from its Houston factory

In the Privacy & Security section of Settings, you can export an Apple Intelligence Report – a report of your AI data, for transparency purposes. Biometric authentication is required.

⚙️ How to Enable Apple Intelligence

If your device is compatible, enabling it is simple:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri
  3. Enable the Apple Intelligence toggle
  4. Your device will download the on-device AI models (requires time and WiFi)
  5. After download, AI features are automatically enabled across all apps

💡 OnOff.gr Tip: After enabling, connect to WiFi and put your iPhone on charge. AI models may take 15-30 minutes to download depending on your connection. If you don’t see some features immediately, wait a bit – they activate gradually.

🌍 Language Support

Initially, Apple Intelligence was only available in US English and local variants (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, United Kingdom). Throughout 2025-2026, Apple is gradually adding support for:

  • French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish
  • Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified)
  • Vietnamese, Indian English, Singapore English

Unfortunately, Greek is not yet included in the list. To use Apple Intelligence in Greece, you need to set your Siri language and device language to English. You can keep Greek as a secondary keyboard language.

🔮 What’s Coming – Future Updates

Apple Intelligence is still evolving. Some of the most anticipated features coming in 2026:

  • New Siri with Gemini: Expected in iOS 26.4 – more conversational, more capable, with app control capabilities.
  • Visual Intelligence (iPhone 16+): Use the camera to recognize objects, stores, text – whatever you see, AI gives you information.
  • Image Wand: Transform rough sketches into artistic images in the Notes app.
  • AI Health+: New Health service powered by AI, expected in 2026.
  • Phone Call Summaries: Call recording, transcription, and automatic AI summary.
  • ChatGPT integration: Siri can forward complex queries to ChatGPT (optional, free, no data storage if you don’t sign in).
