🛰️ Emergency SOS via Satellite: The Beginning
In November 2022, Apple released Emergency SOS via Satellite — a feature that turns every iPhone into a satellite emergency phone. Initially available on the iPhone 14, it now works on all iPhone 14 and later models, at no extra cost (free for 2 years after activation).
The technology uses Globalstar satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). When there's no cellular or Wi-Fi signal, the iPhone connects directly to the nearest satellite. The user answers multiple-choice questions about the nature of the emergency, and their location is automatically sent along with the SOS details.
🦸 Lives Saved: Real Stories
The iPhone's satellite technology isn't theoretical — it has already saved dozens of lives in real situations. Some of the most impressive cases:
🌋 Maui Wildfires, Hawaii (2023)
A family was trapped during the devastating wildfires. With zero cellular signal, they used SOS via Satellite and were rescued in time.
🏔️ 120-Meter Fall into a Canyon
A hiker fell into a 400-foot (120m) canyon in Yosemite and used the iPhone to send an SOS via satellite. Rescue arrived within 2 hours.
🏜️ Students in Utah
Two students were trapped in a canyon in Utah with no signal. The satellite SOS alerted authorities and they were saved before nightfall.

📡 SpaceX, Apple & Next-Generation Satellites
In December 2024, Elon Musk's SpaceX launched satellites on behalf of Globalstar — worth $64 million — exclusively to enhance the iPhone's satellite service. This development carries some irony: Musk and Apple clash on many fronts, yet here SpaceX is actively working to make iPhones better.
Apple has invested $1.5 billion in Globalstar and holds a significant stake in the company. The deal secures exclusive network capacity for iPhones.
🔍 Project Eagle: According to reports, Apple started a secret project back in 2015 (codenamed “Eagle”) in collaboration with Boeing, to build its own satellite network — similar to Starlink. The project was ultimately cancelled, but it led to the partnership with Globalstar.
💬 Messages via Satellite: Beyond SOS
With iOS 18, Apple extended satellite connectivity beyond emergency situations. The Messages via Satellite feature allows sending iMessages (and SMS via relay) without cellular signal or Wi-Fi. You can even send emoji!

This means a hiker in the mountains of Crete, a fisherman in the open Aegean Sea, or a skier in a remote resort can message their family even without any signal. The connection is made automatically when the absence of a network is detected.
iPhone Satellite Features 2026
🚗 Roadside Assistance & Find My
Roadside Assistance via Satellite lets you call for roadside help via satellite if you break down in an area with no signal. The call goes through the satellite to the AAA center (in the US) or the equivalent service. Your location is sent automatically.
The Find My via Satellite feature allows friends and family to see your location on the map even without signal — ideal for mountaineers, hikers, and travelers in remote areas.
🇬🇷 Availability in Greece
Satellite SOS connectivity has been available in Greece since December 2022. Greece was among the first European countries to receive the feature, alongside France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

This means that if you find yourself in danger on a Greek island with no signal, in a mountainous area, or during a maritime adventure, your iPhone can send an SOS via satellite to 112. Given Greece's geography with many remote areas, this is extremely important.
⚠️ Important: Satellite connectivity requires a clear view of the sky. It does not work inside buildings, caves, or under dense vegetation. Point the iPhone toward the sky and follow the on-screen instructions.
🔮 The Future: Satellite Internet on iPhone?
The big question is: will the iPhone ever get satellite internet? Apple is working on it. The acquisition of a major stake in Globalstar, the partnership with SpaceX, and reports of new LEO satellites suggest Apple is planning broadband satellite internet — an Apple Starlink.
Analysts estimate that by 2028-2030, iPhones will be able to connect to satellite internet for web browsing, streaming, and phone calls — even in the middle of the ocean.
