🌐 What is the EU Digital Identity Wallet
The EUDI Wallet is an app that will allow all European citizens to store and use digital identification documents. It's not just a digital ID — it's a complete digital wallet with legal validity across all EU countries.
The eIDAS 2.0 regulation requires all member states to offer an EUDI Wallet to their citizens by the end of 2026. Greece will integrate the wallet into the existing Gov.gr Wallet, creating a unified experience.
📄 What It Will Include
- Digital ID
- Driver's license
- Passport (in a future phase)
- Degrees and diplomas
- Medical certificates
- Electronic prescriptions
- Banking verification
- Electronic signature
❓ How It Will Work in Practice
Imagine you're traveling to Germany and need to rent a car. Today you need a physical license, ID, perhaps even a translation. With the EUDI Wallet, you simply show a QR code or use NFC. The rental company verifies your documents in seconds.
The same applies to opening a bank account, enrolling in a university, accessing public services, or signing contracts. The digital signature through the wallet will have the same legal validity as a handwritten one.
👤 For Citizens
- All documents in one place
- Recognition in 27 countries
- Free to use
- Control what you share
- No more lost documents
🏢 For Businesses
- Instant customer verification
- Fraud reduction
- Easier onboarding
- KYC/AML compliance
- Cross-border transactions
🔒 Privacy and Security
Privacy is central to the design. You control what you share. If someone wants to verify that you're over 18, they don't need to see your full name. The wallet can answer “yes” or “no” without revealing anything more.
Data is stored locally on your device, not on central servers. Strong encryption and biometric access (Face ID, fingerprint) are used. If you lose your phone, you can deactivate the wallet remotely and restore it on a new device.
❓ When and How to Get It
In Greece, the EUDI Wallet will be available as an upgrade to the Gov.gr Wallet. If you're already using it, you'll receive a notification about the upgrade. The process will be simple: verification through TaxisNet, biometric authentication, and you're good to go.
