Microsoft's Copilot Tasks: How AI Takes Complete Control of Your Computer

📅 23 March 2026 ⏱️ 3 min read ✍️ OnOff Team

Microsoft did what many feared — and some dreamed of. Copilot Tasks lets AI use your computer on its own. It opens apps, writes emails, makes bookings, and you just... watch.

🤖 How It Works

You give Copilot an instruction — e.g., “book a dentist appointment for Thursday afternoon.” Copilot opens the browser, navigates to the dentist's website (or calls via Teams), selects a slot, fills out the form, and sends you a confirmation. You approve the final step (or set auto-approve).

This isn't a macro recorder — it's an AI agent that understands context. It sees what's on screen, decides which button to click, and adapts if something changes (popup, redirect, error).

✅ What It Can Do Today

  • Email drafting and sending via Outlook
  • Scheduling meetings and calendar management
  • Web browsing: searches, form filling, online ordering
  • File management: renaming, organizing, moving files
  • Data entry: extracting information from PDFs to Excel

⚠️ The Risks

The idea of AI controlling your computer raises legitimate concerns. Privacy: Copilot sees everything — passwords, personal data, banking. Microsoft says data stays local. Mistakes: an AI sending the wrong email to your boss or clicking a phishing link isn't funny. Dependency: if you rely on AI for everything, what happens when it stops working?

🔐 Important: Copilot Tasks initially works only on latest Windows 11 with Copilot+ PCs (NPU chip). Not available on Mac or older PCs.

🔮 Where This Leads

What we're seeing with Copilot Tasks is the start of a new era: AI agents that don't just answer questions — they act. Google is preparing something similar (Project Mariner), Apple too (Siri with App Intents). In 2-3 years, it'll be normal to say “AI, pay the electricity bill” and it just happens. The question is: will you trust AI enough to let it?
