🖥️ What Is DAEDALUS
DAEDALUS (Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence for Leadership and Unified Services) is Greece's first national supercomputer. It is part of the European EuroHPC JU (Joint Undertaking) network that aims to make Europe independent in high-performance computing.
With a computing power of 6.5 PetaFLOPS, it can perform 6.5 quadrillion calculations per second. To put that in perspective: what a regular computer would take 1 year to do, DAEDALUS completes in less than 1 second.

🎯 Why It Matters for Greece
Scientific Research
Greek researchers no longer need to send their data to foreign supercomputers. Climate simulations, biomedical research, particle physics—everything can run here, with full data sovereignty.
Artificial Intelligence
Training AI models requires enormous computing power. With DAEDALUS, Greek companies and universities can develop their own AI models without depending on foreign platforms.
Industry & Innovation
Startups and large enterprises gain access to infrastructure that was previously impossible or prohibitively expensive. Product design, simulations, big data analytics— all at a fraction of the cost of cloud computing.
Digital Sovereignty
Sensitive data (healthcare, defense, public administration) stays within borders. Dependence on hyperscalers (AWS, Google, Azure) is significantly reduced for critical applications.
👥 Who Can Use DAEDALUS
Access is not limited to large institutions. There are different programs depending on the needs:
Academics & Researchers
Free access for universities, research centers, and doctoral students. Application through GRNET.
FREEStartups & SMEs
Subsidized access through vouchers and innovation programs. Ideal for AI/ML prototypes.
SUBSIDIZEDLarge Enterprises
Commercial access at competitive prices. Significantly cheaper than equivalent cloud computing.
COMMERCIAL🔭 First Projects Currently Running
Mediterranean Climate Simulations
Modeling climate change in the wider region, with a focus on wildfires and droughts. Collaboration between the National Meteorological Service and the National Observatory.
Greek LLM Development
Training a large language model for the Greek language, using data from libraries, archives, and digitized content.
Pharmaceutical Research
Molecular simulations for drug discovery. Collaboration with pharmaceutical companies and medical schools.
Seismic Simulations
Modeling seismic activity and impacts on buildings. Critical for earthquake-resistant construction design.
🚀 What Comes Next
DAEDALUS is just the beginning. EuroHPC JU is planning an upgrade to exascale level by 2028, while Greece is considering creating a second node in Thessaloniki for load balancing and disaster recovery.
DAEDALUS is not just a machine—it's nationally significant infrastructure. It gives Greece the ability to compete in fields where it was previously impossible: from artificial intelligence to climate science.
The era of computational dependence is ending. Greece now computes on its own.
